Teen Choices is a health class for grade 8. Foods class is offered in the spring. Teen Choices covers sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Stay tuned!
We are watching the film Food Inc. in order to learn more about where our food comes from. This is a documentary about the big business of the food industry. http://www.takepart.com/foodinc Facts from Food, Inc.
We went to the Price Chopper to look at ingredients in foods. It is nearly impossible to find a bread without sugar or even a frozen pizza that is sugar free. Back at school, we reviewed the nutrients, their functions and food sources. Then we had an opportunity to cook a simple snack.
This is a series of lessons created by The New York Times about sugar. It includes several articles about sugar.

In addition, the movie explores the role of lobbyists and corporate influence on public policy. The movie challenges viewers to give up food with added sugar for ten days. Next week we will go to the Price Chopper and look at food labels. Sugar is added to most foods we buy (breads, condiments, sandwich meat, yogurts, and snack foods).
Teen Choices………………………………...Research a Psycho-Active Substance
Each day in class, you should work on one task. Each day you should complete one task. Share each completed task with me so that you can get credit for that day. (google, notecards, notes) Be sure to paraphrase and cite your sources. Don’t make stuff up! Since there are 5 tasks, it should take two weeks to do research. If you are working with a partner or friend on the same topic, I will assign you additional tasks. TASK 1: Introduction. Describe the drug. (looks like, slang names, how it is used or taken, history, cost) TASK 2: Current Events. Find an interesting news article that illustrates the impact this drug has on society. (print it out) Write a summary. Include the who, what, why, when, how. TASK 3: Physical Effect. What does the drug to the body? What specific organs are impacted by immediate use? long term use? TASK 4: Consequences of use. What are the legal consequences of using this drug? What are the social consequences of use? (family, friends, community) TASK 5: Data and Statistics. List at least three relevant statistics about the substance The next phase is putting it all together. What do you want your PRODUCT to be? A Google presentation? poster? website? In our chocolate chip cookie unit we are learning about the function of ingredients. We will make dozens of cookies: Soft and chewy, thin and crispy, thick and cakey. How can we get such different results with the same pile of ingredients?
