See you soon!
We are watching the film, Fed Up as part of our nutrition unit. http://fedupmovie.com This film explores the role that sugar plays in obesity and our health. In addition, the movie explores the role of lobbyists and corporate influence on public policy. The movie challenges viewers to give up food with added sugar for ten days.
Sugar How much is just right? The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends limiting the amount of added sugars you consume to no more than half of your daily discretionary calories allowance. For most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons. The AHA recommendations focus on all added sugars, without singling out any particular types such as high-fructose corn syrup. https://www.supertracker.usda.gov/Super Tracker Are you getting enough of all the nutrients you need? Put your food into supertracker and find out. Instructions: We went to the Price Chopper to look at ingredients in foods. It is nearly impossible to find a bread without sugar or even a frozen pizza that is sugar free. Back at school, we reviewed the nutrients, their functions and food sources. Then we had an opportunity to cook a simple snack.

Students' first homework assignment was to bring in a clean, non offensive joke to share. This assignment addresses many of the skills we address in our health curriculum. Students need to set a goal, access information, be respectful, use effective communication skills, advocate for themselves or others, make a decision and make a healthy choice.
