TEEN CHOICES: GRADE 8 This is a 44 day class that meets every other day for a semester.
Quarter 1 22 days
Alcohol, Tobacco, Other Drugs: Students will understand the effects of ATOD in society and recognize the impact on personal health.
Students will:
- * Read current events, news and research to develop their background knowledge and begin to understand the consequences of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on the adolescent brain. Critical reading and questioning will result in ideas for student research projects.
- * Research and create a presentation on a drug. The main points will include: physical effects of the drug, health consequences, legal consequences, social consequences.
- * Practice refusal skills, and behavioral rehearsals using the Michigan Model and the Project Alert curriculum. In addition, Lauren Petrie, BAMS student assistance program counselor will work with us.
Media Literacy: Students will interpret and evaluate different types of media and recognize its impact on health and wellness.
Students will be able to:
- * Explain the importance of privacy settings and security on social media sites.
- * Propose solutions to cyberbullying.
- * Critique a variety of media as it relates to self-image, identity, alcohol and drug use, and gender roles.
Quarter 2 22 days
Sexuality, Reproduction, Healthy Relationships: Students will:
* Demonstrate understanding of possible consequences of sexual activity.
* List characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships and identify sources of gender stereotypes
* Define consent and sexual harassment
* Identify parts and function of reproductive male and female anatomy
Learning activities include reading current events, news and research to develop background knowledge. Students will understand the risks and consequences of early sexual activity, gender stereotypes, and harassment. Relevant statistics and case studies will be presented for review. Critical reading and questioning will result in ideas for student research projects.- * Anatomy, contraception, and infections presented by Ricky Davidson, Ms Goodhue, Lauren Petrie and school nurses.
- * Students will create a product/pamphlet/poster/ that informs. Topics might include contraception, gender, sexuality, sexually transmitted infections, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships.
- *SAFE-T program by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont. The SAFE- T Program curriculum is a two year progression designed for 7th and 8th grade students. It is a skills-based violence prevention and health education curriculum. For more information: http://www.pcavt.org/~pcavt/
