Healthy Choices
The Goal of the health education curriculum is to promote students who are health literate. A student who is health literate has the ability to obtain and understand basic health information and use such information to enhance health. Students in grade 7 may take this class, Healthy Choices. Students will examine and practice decision making, media literacy, refusal skills, self advocacy and communication.
Beginning: Who is responsible for your health? What does it mean to be healthy? What influences our health? What influences our decisions? Learning activities include jokes, Squirrel Cop (https://vimeo.com/6442040), Story of Jake and the Magic Bullet. (a play)
Nutrition: Students will demonstrate understanding of food and nutrition and their roles in maintaining good health and proper body weight. What are you eating for lunch and why should you care?
Alcohol, Tobacco, Other Drugs: Students will understand the risks of ATOD use and recognize the impact on personal health. Students will:

- Research and create a short presentation on a drug. The main points will include: physical effects of the drug, health consequences, legal consequences, social consequences.
- Practice refusal Skills, and behavioral rehearsals using the Michigan Model and the Project Alert curriculum. In addition, Lauren Petrie, BAMS student assistance program counselor will work with us.
- SAFE-T program by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont. The SAFE- T Program curriculum is a two year progression designed for 7th and 8th grade students. It is a skills-based violence prevention and health education curriculum. For more information: http://www.pcavt.org/~pcavt/
- Topics include empathy, boundaries, flirting, sexual harassment, healthy and unhealthy relationships, identifying resources and information.
